President Uhuru Kenyatta Pays an Official visit to Switzerland.
H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta undertook a successful visit to Bern, Switzerland on 19th and 20th May 2022, on an invitation from his counterpart, H.E. Ignazio Cassis, who is both President and Foreign Minister of Switzerland. The Official Visit was undertaken in return,
following the visit of the then President of Switzerland, H.E. Alain Berset to Kenya in July 2018. During that visit, H.E. President Kenyatta announced that Kenya would open an Embassy in Switzerland. This pledge was fulfilled on 2 nd April 2020, with the presentation of credentials by Amb. Andrew Kihurani, as the first Ambassador of Kenya to Switzerland with seat in Bern.
During his visit, H.E. The President commissioned the Kenya Embassy Chancery which was set up in October 2020. H.E. President Kenyatta highlighted the role that the Embassy was expected to play in promoting trade and tourism between the two countries, as well as the continuation of strengthening of relations in various spheres between the two states.
H.E. the President met the Swiss President in the evening of 20th May 2022, during which he was hosted for an Official Working Dinner. Prior to the Dinner, the two countries signed two
instruments to strengthen cooperation in various sectors, including international peace
missions, research, education and innovation.
In the Official Working Dinner, the two leaders exchanged views on a range of bilateral and multilateral issues, including engagement within the United Nations Security Council. Kenya is presently a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period 2021/2022, while Switzerland is currently seeking a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the period 2023/2024.
H.E. President Kenyatta left Bern for Geneva on 21st May 2022, where he was scheduled to commission the new Chancery of the Permanent Mission of Kenya to the United Nations and to address the World Health Assembly on 22nd May 2022.
